As the Springboks go head-to-head with the best in the world at the 2011 Rugby World Cup, immedia and SuperSport have launched an exciting new version of the SuperSport iPad application – just in time for the kick off.

SuperSport

SuperSport wanted to take the rugby experience to the next level with an enhanced multimedia experience for its viewers. The defining feature of the new app is that it digs even deeper into the rich content that SuperSport has become synonymous with, and in so doing, perfectly displays the ability of mobile technology to infuse viewer interactions with a richer, more meaningful experience.

immedia Head of Development Kishyr Ramdial says the new version of the SuperSport iPad app is a perfect example of the mobile intellectual property that can be created within the African context. He explains that what sets the latest SuperSport iPad app apart from others on the market is “its real time data uploads, making it a true match companion and what’s more, the updates are pushed to the application live, so there is no need to refresh the screen”.

The application also offers a far more vibrant, engaging interaction with the SuperSport brand using features such as:
– Real-time updates on scores, substitutions as well as the latest fixtures, results, logs.
– Live match commentary
– Live in-game match chat which allows viewers to chat to other avid sports fans in real time
– Match stats and player profiles
– Match check-in

DStv Online GM Portals, Graeme Cumming explains that the second-screen application was developed with user involvement and interaction in mind. “It’s meant to complement the ‘first screen’ viewing experience, by allowing a user to dip into the data aspects of a game, and more importantly, interact with other fans. We know that users are multi-tasking while watching television and we hope that this application engages them in a way that enhances their love of the game.

“Looking ahead, our hope is that this application will provide users with a live sporting experience second to none. It provides a fun, new way of engaging with other like-minded fans and although this initial release has a strong rugby focus, we are already working on creating similar experiences for the football, cricket and golf fans,” says Cumming.

Latest reviews of the new app support this approach:

“Gotta love this… to have all the stats to hand during a rugby game and be able to chat to other (viewers) at the same time, is gonna be great. Only hope this becomes available for footy in the near future too” and “Ok, SuperSport has really gone all the way with regards to the rugby pools, chat and live scores & stats updates. Very well done! A must have for anyone who loves sport!”
